Backlink: A backlink is a link back to your website from another site. The more backlinks you have, the better your site authority on search engines.

Blackhat: Originally a term to differentiate “good” hackers from “bad” hackers. Blackhat is a term used for hackers that sometimes use illegal or otherwise “questionable” techniques. Whitehat was to describe hackers that used their knowledge and skills for good. Greyhat was a term that later came from the two. Grey obviously being somewhere in the middle of the two “hats”. Greyhat is usually still somewhat “questionable”, just not breaking policies in open-view.

CMS: Standing for Content Management System, CMS software allows you to easily manage a website. It’s usually a nice back-end software that will allow you to manage multiple parts of a website including image gallery, bulletin board, blog, links, etc.

Duplicate content: Many search engines will penalize you if they find the exact same web page, article, etc. on your site as well as on another site. The penalty will most likely be giving your site less authority, which will result in a much lower ranking on a search engine.

Link train: See this post.

Permalinks: Permalinks are the structure of which your website is built upon. Essentially they are the links of the directories and files on your website. Most Blog or CMS software has a permalink structure modifier built into it. See this post for instructions on modifying permalinks in WordPress.

Site authority: Search engines assign a number to your website. Each search engine has it’s own way of calculating your authority. Depending on your authority, your site will either be listed higher or lower on search results with competing websites (for the terms someone is searching for).

Word-stuffing: Word-stuffing is putting tons of words on the same page that have no use to your readers. They can be meta tags or just put anywhere in general. Search engines hate this because it can put give your site more authority than it should have (according to the search engine). It could also land your page a rating of “spam” and then lower your authority ratings.
